(Whitcomb interviewed David Moke near Gomlongon Village, Umboi Island, late in 2004.) Following the local custom of night-fishing with a water-proof flash-light, Moke and a friend were using a canoe over a reef one night around June, 2004. While his friend was under water, Moke was surprised by a bright light that lit up the reef and the water all the way to the trees on the shore. The source of the light was unseen but it gradually became dimmer until it was gone. The brightness lasted about five seconds.

Investigators believe the creature called “ropen” on Umboi Island, controls a bioluminescent glow that is said to last five or six seconds, at least in its greatest intensity.
