Gideon, puzzled by Whitcomb’s question, answers, “There’s no feathers.”
It’s a common description of the ropen, not only from natives interviewed by Whitcomb, but by many eye-witnesses, including Australians and one American World War II veteran: Ropens have no feathers.
Later in the videotaped interview, Gideon reacted positively to the question about the ropen’s wings: “Like byung?” (Flying Fox fruit bat) But with a tail length of “seven meters,” the ropen is no fruit bat. |
