Entrance to Finschhafen Harbor, Papua New Guinea
Inland from Finschhafen, in 1944, Duane Hodgkinson entered a clearing where he saw a “pterodactyl” take off into the air. In 2004, he was interviewed by Whitcomb (by email, telephone, and survey form by mail) and related, “It was a big one! I have a Piper Tri-Pacer air-plane . . .and it appeared to be about that size.” (wing-span of about twenty-nine feet)
In June, 2005, Garth Guessman (another explorer investigating the ropen) met Hodgkinson in person. Their videotaped interviewed was examined by Whitcomb. The sighting was around noon, west of Finschhafen, during a lull in the fighting in that part of New Guinea.
Hodgkinson and another soldier saw the creature take off and circle the clearing before flying away. The tail was estimated to be “at least ten to fifteen feet long.”
